Benny is a Wheaton Terrier that even as a puppy would get attacked at the dog park. When this continually happened to Benny you almost had to wonder if he had an invisible sign on his back saying “kick me”.

We’ve all heard about the cats that are rehomed for urinating outside the box. The whole situation starts out exactly the same.….the people in the beginning almost smugly think to themselves – ‘this is such a nice cat, who would let this cat go’. And then after letting go of enough furniture, letting go of enough cash over blood tests, finally, they too let the cat go.

And then there’s the horses like Dexter who have some aches and pains, mainly around the kidney area – that kidney may or may not be doing its job of dumping properly, but that horse is certainly dumping his rider any chance he gets and as a result, the horse gets dumped over and over and over again.

To see some animals (and people for that matter) continually fall into the same trap, reenact the same behavior almost against their own will – over and over again or to watch a pattern repeat itself, you’d almost have to say that something else was running the show. In a way that’s true. The hard part of history repeating itself like this is these are usually very sensitive wonderful beings that are simply misunderstood…..or even more importantly, misread and so as the pattern was resurfacing, the people around the animal couldn’t react in time.

We are all energy – we are electro-magnetic. We are wrapped by a field of energy known as our aura. We connect up energetically with other electromagnetic fields that we come into contact with. The earth has a field of energy, so does a blade of grass and so does our animal companion(s). This is both electric and magnetic. It is vibrant (electric) and clearly we can see that the pattern is magnetic as well.

Rupert Sheldrake, PhD, author of “Dogs That Know When Their Owners are Coming Home, and other unexplained Powers of Animals” subscribes to the theory of Morphic Resonance. He believes that a like attracts a like and that all of nature has a habitual coherency – meaning – nature has patterns. We are PART of nature, therefore inherent in our being is the need to draw in, attract or magnetize that from the bigger memory bank of our collective field of energy.

Wow, did you follow that? If not, that’s fine – it’s hard to express….let’s just say that whether we’re conscious of it or not, our energy field around us carries a vibe. And that vibe, unless we’re conscious of it is going to continue the pattern. And perhaps even magnetize more of that….whatever that is for you or your animal(s).

For some of you this is not a newsflash. For some of you this is another way to examine what could be done to remedy a situation. This is not good news or bad news – it is simply news. The first three paragraphs were situations that were challenges – the next three are quite different……

We’ve all met that cat that sits in the corner that is funny. With one glance of a cat we just met, we know he’s funny. He didn’t even move and we just know he’s funny. We don’t know why we know he’s funny, we just know he’s funny. We could say to the owner “Gosh, your cat seems funny” and we’d get a loud response “OMG – he’s hilarious!!!” The cat oozes funny out of his field.

I was flipping through the channels one day and there was a dog show. If anyone knows me they will know this: flipping through channels is about an every other year activity. This was the day. There was the dog show. Each dog that entered the Best in Show class was striking, amazing, perfection of its breed, a true prize of the canine species. I was truly grateful I was not the judge. Who would I pick? Every dog that entered was justly the best. And the judge picked the dog he picked. Perfect. The commentator then noted that the winning dog had 24 wins. Of course he won.

Jan and Bruce Hlavacek had a dream of owning a horse to play at the International level. When Jan could no longer ride her own horse due to a back injury, she still had this dream. They picked Magic. Now that Magic is winning everything, I couldn’t help but to ask Jen – what specifically drew her to this horse. It was no mystery on the one hand – she set her Morphic Resonance in motion by picking Shannon and Steffen Peters as the trainers. (They have a LOT of wins in their Dressage field!)

Shannon called her one day and said “I got this great horse in that I think is International quality” and they went on what Shannon said. Jen will tell you quite frankly that she does not look across a pasture and say “Oh that has International potential” she had what she calls – an attraction goal. By knowing what they wanted and being well versed at getting what she wants, she magnetized that horse right into her field. And Steffen Peters field, who with all due respect, is a human with more wins than that Best in Show dog. Their fields have merged, morphed into quite the winning ticket. They are winning everything.

So we can create for ourselves and our animals a true magical win! I actually have many more wonderful stories to share about what Magic the horse is doing as an inspiration – yet I will leave for now on that wonderful thought of how much we are setting up. Or how much we are standing by and reinforcing something the animal may be magnetizing in from the past.

Here are three little questions you might ask yourself on behalf of you and your animal companion:

Why are we magnetizing this (situation) in?

How can I magnetize the dreams, the possibility, the magic into our fields?

What can we do to create a more positive possibility and re-pattern this field for this animal – and our household?

Remember our energetic field can also pull in the best of dreams just as easily as the other! Just look at that picture below and note what a field of dreams both Magic and Steffen Peters simply breathe in!

Add this with the 2012 hype/hope and we have a stress brew on high just waiting to boil over that no sommelier, Priest, bartender, French chef, therapist, hair dresser, barista or witch could downgrade to a simmer.

It is a time that we offer gifts to people that we could have helped all year long and reach out to family members that we could have connected with in April, in June – anytime. It is a time that we express more emotion, we feel even more sentimental, more heightened, more…everything.

In past stories I would tell you how much this is affecting your animals. I would cite everything from recent findings that even humans can detect fear pheromones or that our animals can track your mind and see visually the stress that the fruit cake is causing you that you bought for that long lost Aunt Mabel who is now in a home and therefore, the dog has spared you any undue humiliation by finding it in the cupboard and demolishing it while you went to get the mail.

We can talk until the cows come home about the pictures, words and feelings that your animals pick up on as a result of our unawareness. I know with this readership, I am speaking to the choir. Or I can be that gentle reminder to be careful about what you think about the rest of the year. And yet, this time I want to talk about something else. And by the way, when do the cows come home? And where will we put them?

When the student is ready, the teacher will appear. Many of my readers are ‘seekers’ and others are people that adore their animal. Either way – you have met your Spiritual Teacher whether you like it or not. It is usually 4 legged, lives in your home or in your barn…if it has two legs it has feathers and is loud. And they have a presence.

Up until now, who were your greatest teachers and why? Was it PE? Was it art school? Was it some journalist that had to follow the truth? Was it an ethics professor in Law School? Was it shop class when they lifted that engine out? My ‘guess’ is he/she is sitting on your couch right now, or perhaps has taken over your entire bed late at night so that you wake up in an L shape so as not to disturb your beloved(s). Or it is in a barn, with a blanket on this chilly night, nibbling the hay delivered at night check?

Sometimes the lessons are hard to take. We try everything to fix this one or we want a different outcome. Sometimes our beloved appears to be trying to tell us something we don’t seem to get. Sometimes the biggest teachers come with the most extreme situations.

So let’s take the next few weeks, use a dog training method of: ‘leave it’ and drop all thoughts/feelings we’ve had and just be present. Let’s ‘leave it’ with all those crazy ideas about who, what, when, where and how the situation began…let’s ‘leave it’ when we think about all the things we have done to try to remedy the situation…let’s ‘leave it’ when we think about what their past must have been like…let’s ‘leave it’ when we think of the unending possibilities that could also fix the situation…let’s ‘leave it’ when we have regrets. Let’s take this time and really look in our teachers’ eyes:

Even when that teacher ‘appears’ to be a relentless Cujo in the neighborhood, threatening and God forbid attacking other unsuspecting neighbor dogs;

Even when that teacher ‘appears’ to hate all humans with hats;

Even when that teacher has peed everywhere but the litter box;

Even when that teacher is super bitchy when we put the saddle on and we have X-Rayed the back, brought out the saddle fitter, the chiro and the equine massage therapist;

Even when the teacher is so shy that they have to hide – oh wait, first pee a little and then hide;

Even when that teacher is lying on the floor in their final stages, all of our friends have been annoyed with us because we “should” or “could” let the animal go and yet there is a compelling love and presence in their eyes that still is engaged;

Even when that teacher struggles longer than it takes than a commute to the city to get up in the pasture with older hooves, creaky bones and slippery frost on the ground and yet, they are present when they finally stand;

Even when they won’t put the wheels on that you spent a fortune for and an even bigger cash outlay went to throw rugs for your floors that DO NOT go with the furnishings;

Even then and always, they have brought you the gift of presence. They have brought you the gift of being present. My holiday wish for you is to recognize your gifts and the wonderful teachers around you at all times. Take a moment and breathe in what your teacher is offering and say thank you!

As an animal communicator, my job is to translate what your pet is thinking or feeling. I use telepathy (the transference of pictures, words and feelings). Many people aren’t aware that we are all animal communicators; I have simply developed a skill. Telepathy is a two-way street, at the very least; sometimes it’s a five-way stop. As much as people love to find out what their animal is thinking, it can be even more enlightening to know what it is we are actually sending. We are sending a lot of inner SPAM to our pets via our own thoughts and feelings about random things in life. This is an immediate picture that is sent, our pets in turn can either want to help the situation or act out as a result of our state of being. We all are living with a certain degree of personal stress and we are all microcosms that can accidently absorb the global fear, anxiety and worry. Then we try to figure out why our well-behaved dog jumps on our dinner guests, or worse.

When we forget the simplicity and joy in life or are distracted, so many things get mixed up in translation and naughty behavior can result. My best advice is:

Say what you mean and mean what you say. Our animal companions are looking to us and listening to us at all times. We are their emotional leaders; we have to be the leader of the pack, herd, pride or flock. They are dependent upon us for their wellbeing. As I say in my book, Communication with all Life, Revelations of an Animal Communicator, we are of one mind.

When we say a command like “no,” or “come,” we have to commit to that intention. So many times I see someone say “no” to a small dog and then two seconds later they pick the dog up and kiss it because it’s so cute. What is that really saying? It’s saying “no, yes, you are the cutest, just do what you want.” Is that really providing safety/leadership for them? The answer is no.

Mentally we do the same thing: we say no and then we think that they’re just going to do it again. What mixed message is that non-committal command saying? It’s saying, “Go ahead, take over,” and nothing good can come out of that when in a challenging situation.

When you ask an animal to do something are you pleading? Are you hopeful? Frustrated? Are you saying it with great authority? Is it mixed? Do you have joyful expectation? Is it fun? Even if it’s a bath? Listen to your tone and see if you can’t have a little more expectation and authority. This also helps send a more positive image (picture) and security to them.

Consciously picking your words, nicknames, or stories is another key thing. I know, we all lose our tempers or to be funny we tell a story about our animal friend. But it is not just our story; we are making it forever their story, their mythology, and that story becomes bigger than them. They have to follow through with the epic behavior.

A check and balance of where we are emotionally is important, especially in challenging situations. Automatically, the pictures and the feelings follow the words. Saying something to get attention with great authority, expression, and emotional leadership is a great state change for you and your animal companion(s). It automatically sends the picture. Then you can create a new behavior pattern.

A friend of mine called the other day from Los Angeles and said she wanted to set up a phone consultation for her dog. I said “you don’t need to”. She said “why not?” I said “because I already know what is going on.” (Not that I’m that psychic mind you – but as an Animal Communicator I’ve seen this a million times). I continued “you’re calling me because your dog is depressed.” She agreed. “She came to you depressed and fearful and you are depressed at times so the two of you are a great mirror and commiserate when you’re depressed. When you’re not depressed, you spend the rest of the time feeling sorry for her past. Therefore, you are falling into what I call default behavior.” I told her to call me in a few days if she still wanted a session.

We all fall into default behavior. We don’t allow the moment to exist. I explained to my friend that at that point, that dog was lucky. In fact, it had been lucky for all the years they were together. It no longer had the sad circumstances it had before and in fact, she had a great life. The dog had a kid and a cat to look after, my friend loves her – it doesn’t get any better.

When I saw her in person weeks later I asked about the dog. She said the switch was overnight. Once she acknowledged that this was a great life NOW, the dog could enjoy life.

Not everything is that quick, but really it could be. When we default into certain feelings, we allow the animal to ‘get away’ with certain behavior that is not serving the harmony of the household. If we continue to feel sorry for someone or stay hurt by something, we are not allowing them to be all that they can be.

This is not to say that we need to be in denial, it’s the opposite. By staying in the past feelings, we are actually denying them the present (and who is better than the present than animals?!) Sometimes you already know the painful circumstances that the entire household is clinging to. And if you don’t, it’s a good time to call in an Animal Communicator. But meanwhile, acknowledging the circumstances is important, but also acknowledging how great things are NOW is vital. They don’t have to stay in feelings. Feelings are like waves at the ocean, they come and go. (We all tend to forget the go part.) Sometimes giving it a date to let it go – like we can all feel badly about this until next Friday is a great way – you all might get bored by Tuesday and be on with the day.

The following are typical examples of things WE ALL DO:

1. Feeling guilty about going out of town or being away all day.

If guilt was measured in dollar amounts and put into a bank account, it could give the Vatican a run for its money. And there’s no place better than to do this with our animals!! There are lots of ways around this. First of all, you have to do what you have to do (as in j.o.b.) in order to afford this dog/cat/bird/goldfish/horse the life of luxury he/she gets to lead. Secondly, you can say everything with a positive tone. “I will be home at 4:00 and we get to go on a walk.” While you are away, replace the guilt with the feeling of looking forward to connecting with your friend. Believe it or not they pick up on stuff when we are away and what would you rather send, something good or bad? Make your vacations a vacation for them, they get to eat all that stuff I would never feed you with the housesitter, etc. It’s fun, all fun, they respond to an uplifted spirit.

2. Feeling guilty about adding a baby or another pet to the household.

Life is life. While your dog/cat/bird/goldfish/horse may have been the baby before and a real live baby is coming into the home, you may want to include them – that you need their help – employ them. They can always use an extra job. They can be in charge of the safety or training of the new animal….etc. By feeling guilty, you are setting up room for them to be resentful and act out.

3. Feeling sad about an animal’s past.

Here’s a big one. Again, the example at the top is truly how quickly we can help them let it go. If that doesn’t do it, as I said, let them download with an Animal Communicator. Sometimes just getting their story “off their chest” so to speak allows freedom. In addition, having it released from their muscle memory by a canine massage therapist, a cranial sacral practitioner, acupuncture and/or chiropractic, may be the best money spent. Sometimes bad memories are stored in their bodies and it is our job to help them find the therapy to get it out. Also the word “rescue” has such a negative, sad, forlorn vibration to it. If you were to close your eyes and think of the word rescue, it automatically brings up unwanted feelings, quite literally. So start referring to the day that you adopted your friend as the “lucky day”. Encourage people that are in the rescue world to start finding other words like “sanctuary”. Nothing leads to bad behavior faster than the word rescue. We feel sorry for them and let them get away with things we wouldn’t let a kid do. There still have to be boundaries. Chances are good that if you are a caring guardian and are reading a magazine like this to learn to be better, your animal is already on the road to a charmed life. So just start expressing and enjoying it more!! But don’t forget boundaries and training.

4. Staying mad about an episode in the past.

This can create the never ending cycle of really bad behavior. Animals pick up on the pictures words and feelings of their guardians very quickly. When we hang on to an episode that infuriates us, unfortunately, we are creating a billboard for them to replicate the behavior. They are not necessarily picking up on our feelings about the event; they just see the instant replay in our mind and think they need to do it again. If your cat isn’t using the litter box and you’ve run blood work and you’re quite sure the problem is behavioral, rather than to cling to the image, try to sort out what they are ‘pissed off’ about while at the same time, picture them using the litter box. I know this is difficult but you can’t let your mind slip – not even at work. Forgive the behavior and send the picture you want.

5. Being fearful of how the animal will behave.

Again, this is billboard material. And when we get a little panicky about something – i.e. our dog gets leash aggressive and we don’t want to see any of the neighbors, unfortunately, we are setting them up not only in our mind but in our body language and the tone in our voice. At this point the time and money spent on a good dog trainer is worth its weight in gold. You can’t afford the fear and must remember, you are in charge – it is your home, in fact at that moment, you need to provide them with security. Fake it until you make it down the road the first day and then call a dog trainer.

I am not pointing the finger at anyone. Over the years I have made all of these mistakes with dogs, cats, horses, etc. What I have found in life is there are no mistakes only lessons. Our animal companions offer these so graciously!!

She remembered that she had a gun in her truck and she put the coyote out of his misery.

Now being half city chick living on a farm, I jumped a little in my seat as I read this. Knowing it was the kindest thing to do, it still left me with the question, would I have had the guts in that moment? Anyway enough about that…..Nancy was writing because she was really plagued by the whole event. She was so sad for the coyote.

She wondered if she had done the right thing and couldn’t get the sadness out of her system. In Ted Andrews book Animal Speak: “There is always hidden wisdom where the coyote is concerned”. Ted Andrews considers the Coyote to both be Wisdom and Folly.

I reminded Nancy that she helped this coyote – she then asked “Did the coyote’s spirit call me over to do this?”

I don’t know that the Coyote’s spirit specifically knew she had a gun in the back of her truck and was calling out “Hey Nancy, help me!” I do know that the Coyote needed help and that Nancy’s Spirit knew she needed something in that moment in time in order to grow and their Spirits were a perfect match for that need for that moment. Sometimes that’s all we are for another being is part of a Divine match. We don’t even know the impact we have on someone or a group of people.

Nancy and I continued an e-dialogue over this situation. In the thread, I reminded her that the sadness was her version of sadness as she processed the event emotionally. While a coyote is family driven – and tend to mate for life, a coyote isn’t going to carry that sadness onto the next plane.

While their grief would exist, it’s balanced out by their survival instinct. If it isn’t balanced, in the wild, the grief could get the better of the coyote, as in falling prey to someone else out there. Which is probably why we don’t see that many woe is me coyotes.

I said to Nancy – is it possible that you are just personalizing this loss through your filter?? What if the concept were true that the reason you feel the Coyote so strongly is because that Coyote is just trying to say “THANK YOU – you helped me. What can I do for you now?”

Sometimes the Coyote message is about deception – how we deceive ourselves……do we do this through our emotional life?

I said to Nancy – what if that Coyote is joyful? What if that Coyote is now in that eternal state of bliss? All this seemed to make sense to Nancy – the consuming haunting feeling vanished. She and I knew at that moment she has a coyote Guardian Angel – a friend for life. A totem if you will. Some well earned grace for helping the Coyote.

It’s easy to filter through our own emotions. Animals don’t process that way. They may weigh in with a few more sophisticated emotions if they have been domesticated and living in our homes, barns or our yards. When it comes down to it – it is very simple. They know the freedom that leaving this body provides.
I wrote this a couple of months ago. In April I held my Animal Alchemy class. Each of the students pulled an animal card for the weekend to meditate on or to relate to or to have that energy come in and assist with the healing work we were doing. One woman pulled the Coyote card.

Oh you would have thought she pulled the Jack the Ripper card. In this age of needing to come off as Spiritually Correct, nobody likes to think of themselves as deceitful, cunning or as a trickster (unless their doing a magic act in Vegas). Yet, sometimes deceit is necessary for survival. The judgment that deceit, cunning and trickster were fixed states of being and were bad or wrong was amazing to me.
And by focusing on that, the concept of creativity, mystery, family and nurturing were all overlooked. When the spotlight went on the latter, well, those were good qualities. What if being cunning or deceitful saves the lives of your family? Is that good or bad? What if you come from a vicious family? Is that good or bad? Once again – it’s simply our filter now of concepts.

Deceit, cunning, trickster, family, creativity, mystery, family and nurturing only hold the value I give those concepts.

There is another piece in this and that is many people fear or dislike Coyotes because of their predatory nature. Somehow, we are deceiving ourselves to not take some responsibility for displacing them. Yet, it’s easier to dislike them.

What if the coyotes are just being coyotes? If it is that simple, why can’t we see the wisdom in that? Those coyotes continue to be great mirrors.

Cindy had her doubts about the whole adoption. She confided that the night before, she connected with her heart dog Amelia (that had crossed over) and said “If I’m supposed to get this dog, please send me a sign”.

Cindy then told me her husband takes care of most of the errands but he was off on a project that day. So she went to the post office. She bought some stamps and when she started to place them on envelopes, she read the stamp. It said: Adopt a pet from a shelter today.

So often we brush off these signs. They are always there for us. It may not be the literal voice of authority we need to hear or an apparition in our driveway on our way to the grocery store. They are subtle and ever present.

The new dog will never fill that void. Nor will you fill the void for the people that are missing from this shelter dog’s life now. You can occupy space in the void together and discover a whole new little soul on your journey to heal.

In fact, it was a soul mate connection that is in the Introduction of my book: “Communication with all Life, Revelations of an Animal Communicator.” Pet One put me on this journey.
Caroline Myss says your soul mate may not be that love connection we romantically fantasize but that person that stretches you. Makes you grow. I say it doesn’t have to be a person – it is that being that stretches you, that makes you grow. That being may be in your household or your barn. It may not be the one that cuddles up with you – it might be that other one!

Even if you have a naughty dog and you have to learn patience, isn’t that a stretch if you are a Type A personality? How about when you have 50 thousand things going, you are at the height of your career, a new lover that has spouse potential and your aging animal is in the throes of passing? Your kid has as soccer game at 3:00 and your horse is sick at the barn and you are torn between the two…..you moved the furniture around and the cat is pooping outside of the box…..they make us slow down and take stock.

While they are offering us unconditional love, and a bevy of other emotions depending upon their behavior, who are they in our lives? With Valentine’s day in mind, I looked up lover in the dictionary…..the third entry is “somebody devoted to something.” Take a look around – everyone in your household is devoted on some level and I believe Valentine’s day is the perfect day to acknowledge that. That includes all dimensions…..because those devoted ones that have passed are still in your heart.

Valentine’s Day started as a note passing between lovers. Today is the 4th – I have only 10 days to get going with a lot of love notes to a lot of animal soul mates that have made me who I am.

As an Animal Communicator, my job is to translate what your pet is thinking or feeling. I use telepathy (the transference of pictures, words and feelings). Many people aren’t aware that we are all animal communicators; I have simply developed a skill. Telepathy is a two way street, at the very least – sometimes it’s a five way stop! Then we try to figure out why our well behaved dog jumps on our dinner guests or worse. I use telepathy (the transference of pictures, words and feelings). Many people aren’t aware that we are all animal communicators; I have simply developed a skill.

Telepathy is a two way street, at the very least – sometimes it’s a five way stop!

Then we try to figure out why our well behaved dog jumps on our dinner guests or worse.

When we forget the simplicity and joy in life or are distracted, so many things get mixed up in translation and naughty behavior can result. My best advice is:

Say what you mean and mean what you say. Our animal companions are looking to us and listening to us at all times. We are their Emotional Leaders – we have to be the leader of the pack, herd, pride or flock. They are dependent upon us for their wellbeing. As I say in my book, Communication with all Life, Revelations of an Animal Communicator, published by Hay House, we are of one mind.

When we say a command like no, or come – we have to commit to that intention. So many times I see someone say “no” to a small dog and then two seconds later, they pick the dog up and kiss it because it’s so cute. What is that really saying? It’s saying “no, yes, you are the cutest, just do what you want.” Is that really providing safety/leadership for them? The answer is no. Mentally we do the same thing – we say no and then we think ‘they’re just going to do it again’ – what mixed message is that non-committal command saying? It’s saying – ‘go ahead – take over’ and nothing good can come out of that when in a challenging situation.

When you ask an animal to do something are you pleading? Are you hopeful? Frustrated? Are you saying it with great authority? Is it mixed? Do you have joyful expectation? Is it fun? – Even if it’s a bath? Listen to your tone and see if you can’t have a little more expectation and authority. This also helps send a more positive image (picture) and security to them.

Consciously picking your words, nicknames or stories is another key thing. I know, we all lose our tempers or to be funny we tell a story about our animal friend. But it is not just our story; we are making it forever their story, their mythology and that story becomes bigger than them. They have to follow through with the epic behavior.

A check and balance of where we are emotionally is important, especially in challenging situations. Automatically, the pictures and the feelings follow the words. Saying something to get attention with great authority, expression and emotional leadership is a great state change for you and your animal companion(s). It automatically sends the picture. Then you can create a new behavior pattern.

But even more aptly, she is the human embodiment of one Mary Poppins, only far more supercalifragilisiticexpialidocious, not to mention a snappier dresser.

When did you decide to become a writer?

I don’t know that I ever decided to be a writer, I have always written. I am aware that I started writing in a diary at age 7. I wasn’t writing because I had anything significant to say or some drama at that point yet. There was always an awareness, sensitivity within that had to be expressed. That being said, those entries are rather dull. A Brontë I was not. Ironically, that year, I wanted to get a horse so I devised a plan that I would perform plays that I had written and then sell the scripts after the show to the 4 neighbors that came and eventually I could buy a horse. Thankfully, that year I won a horse and the world was spared my bad musicals. Even when I was an actress, writing followed like an eager younger sibling. I had a play published in a college literary magazine, I went to the Edinburgh Festival with a show that I co-wrote, I earned a living in Hollywood rewriting while my scripts had been optioned. It’s just always been there. Once I transitioned to be an Animal Communicator of course that skill was very handy in getting my first and soon my second book published. It’s also been helpful to be able to write articles and have people understand their animals better through the stories I tell.

Who was your favorite teacher?

Mrs. Keating. She was my sixth-grade teacher and not a nun at my Catholic girl school. She had been one of those naughty nuns that ran off with the priest which made her quite human and admirable. She was very encouraging and nurturing and yet had a little nun-like no-nonsense. She was passionate about teaching and creativity.

What do you love to write about?

I love to write about animals, giving voice and character to their magnificent instinctual ways in this human thought driven world. I love writing about people transforming – having an epiphany as they realize how much they are already communicating with their animals (for better or worse)……and I love writing about anything that could improve the adventure for all!!

What has writing taught you?

Patience and focus for sure. I had written on a Post-it note in 1998 that my animal communication book would be published by Hay House. It took them 6 years to find me!! I never even put a book proposal in. I just knew I would get that deal. So I was patient and focused. And kept writing.

How has writing made you stronger?

Being able to write about an experience can help you forgive someone or even yourself. Being able to write about an experience can help you let it go. Sometimes writing about something gives you the perspective to say “yeah, I did do that!!” because you captured a delicious moment or “dang girl, I am all that!!” And honestly, to walk in to bookstores big and small and see a stack of your books is the bomb.

If you could go back in time and tell 10-year-old you anything, what would it be?

You’ll have a lot of beautiful horses. The men will come and go….that’s the good news. Just keep writing.

What are your five favorite books, blogs or things to read?

Kinship with all Life, by J. Allen Boone

Living Buddha, Living Christ, by Thich Nhat Hanh

Anatomy of the Spirit, by Caroline Myss I used to adore fiction and anything Chekhov, Tennessee Williams or Pinter. Of course Winnie the Pooh, James and the Giant Peach and Goodnight Moon.

The New Yorker.
