Chapter 1

First Chakra Symbolism

Chakras, particularly the first chakra, are associated with the Kundalini energy moving through the body, up through the chakras. This energy is referred to as a female serpent, coiled in the root chakra, ready to spring up the spine. Through each of the chakras this energy goes, bringing awakening to each area—chakra—and ultimately as it reaches the seventh chakra, consciousness and enlightenment arrives. This first chakra is the seat of that expanding life force.

Some would argue that animals are already conscious and enlightened. Science would say the opposite. Like all things, the truth is somewhere in the middle and rather than assigning the entire ani mal kingdom with “enlightenment” we look at individuals. Besides, whether animals in general have reached enlightenment is not the discussion at hand, but the life force springing forth certainly is.

For that reason, wildebeests springing off riverbanks into the unknown epitomizes the life force at work. The first chakra is all about physicality. And the earth. And grounding. The primal need for survival. Power in numbers—herds, prides, packs, pods, flocks, etc. The first chakra is also about loyalty, justice, and belief systems

The great wildebeest migration is all of that:

  • Survival—better grass
  • Loyalty—loyalty to what we learned when we were just moments old
  • Justice—we have a right to this land
  • Belief systems—this is what we do!

Ultimately, this chakra symbolizes and embodies survival. When that is threatened, it results in fight, or flight.

In the world of human chakras, the first chakra represents tribe, family, family of origin, family bonds, family secrets, belief systems sent down through the ages (DNA), traditions, family habits, and family quirks. The first chakra governs the emotional/mental body, mental health, and logic. This is where our unfinished business sits.

In the animal kingdom, the first chakra represents the herd, flock, the pride, the pod, the colony, the murder, the coalition . . . the family of origin, the family characteristics, and the family quirks. The power in numbers is essential for the survival of a herd.
