The Gibbon Conservation Center is a non-profit that promotes the conservation, study and care of gibbons through public education and habitat preservation. And, it is just down the road from where I live in Santa Clarita!
In 1998 I was living in Los Angeles and I had a friend of mine visiting. She asked me if I wanted to take a drive with her way out to Santa Clarita to see some Gibbons. She said she was a donor and we would have a private tour. I said, sure! She said “Great, because I told the founder that you could talk to them. And there are two that are not getting along.”
I fell in love with Gibbons that day.
When I came to tour the house that I now live in and realized that I would live down the dirt road from the Gibbon Center, that sealed the deal. The founder had since passed away, but the new director and I connected. I walk down there regularly.
And my animal communication classes get to go talk to the Gibbons at every Intensive. In fact, it is always the same very dramatic family.
